Volunteers

If you want to be a part of a vital service at the heart of your local community and you’d like to develop your skills, consider volunteering for CAB. Every Citizens Advice Bureau is a registered charity reliant on the commitment of trained volunteers and funds to provide vital services for local communitie. We are always looking for people from all backgrounds to train as advisors, telephone information assistants and receptionists. No experience is necessary as free full training is given. If you have 6 to 8 hours per week to spare and think you could help please let us know.

Advisors, Telephone Information Assistants & Receptionists

Trustee Board Members

You can help with the running of a local charity using your skills and experience in areas such as Marketing, IT and Training. Helping to support the management team you can provide valuable input and expertise you can make a difference in a less structured way than conventional volunteering.

IT Technicians

Your IT experience is badly needed to help out with the running of our network of desk tops, laptops and printers.

Volunteer Advisers

You don't need any particular qualifications or experience to train as an advisor. You need to be:
•    Good at listening
•    Able to work in a team;
•    Able to read and write English
•    Do basic arithmetic
•    Open-minded and non-judgmental
•    Enjoy helping people
•    Able to commit two days a week
We will train you and offer support during and after training.

Volunteer Administrators

You need to be:
•    Good at listening
•    Able to work in a team
•    Able to read and write English
•    Do basic arithmetic
•    Able to commit two days a week

Volunteer IT Support

You will need to have one or more of :
•    1 year's experience working in IT. In addition you must be
•    Quick to learn
•    Capable of using your initiative

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of voluntary work can I do with the CAB?

•    Advice Workers, who provide advice and information to members of the public.
•    Admin workers, who type correspondence and perform general office duties.
•    Receptionists, who "meet and greet" clients and allocate the daily advice appointments.
•    IT Workers, who maintain our IT system.
•    Trustee Board Members, who do not work with the public but undertake a corporate governance/strategic role.

How much time would I have to give?

•    Advice Work volunteers are asked to give 2 days per week for at least one year.
•    Reception volunteers are asked to give 1 day per week for at least one year.
•    Administration volunteers are asked to give 2 days per week for at least one year.
•    Board members meet once a month for 2-3 hours and are elected for a 3-year term.

What qualifications will I need to volunteer?


•    For Advice Work volunteers no qualifications are necessary, as training will be provided
•    For other roles relevant experience/skills will be discussed on an individual basis

Do you pay expenses?

•    We reimburse public transport expenses to and from your home address,  
•    We do not pay for, or towards, travel cards

How old do I have to have to be to volunteer?

•    The minimum age for volunteering is 16

Can I volunteer if I'm claiming benefits?

•    Volunteering does not affect entitlement to benefits, provided that you continue to meet the conditions of entitlement to the benefit that you are claiming
•    As the work is voluntary no payments are made to you - we only reimburse actual expenses incurred by you in the course of your volunteering
