Meet the People - Part 1

Wednesday, March 11, 2015

I am Ernie Wilks. Originally from London working for both London and Eastern Electricity Boards I moved up to the Midlands with my job at Midlands Electricity Board in 1967. I worked there for nearly 27 Years until I took early retirement in 1994.

Following retirement I took over as Commercial Director and, eventually, Chairman of a company based in Stoke – on - Trent.

When I finally retired in 1999, I decided to train as a volunteer advisor with my local Citizens Advice Bureau. Although I found it very interesting it soon became clear to me that I could put my commercial background to better use to help the bureau by becoming a trustee.

The trustee board are volunteers who provide support in a wide range of areas for the charity. The trustees come from all backgrounds and have expertise in areas such as finance, human resources and commercial negotiations.

I found that I enjoyed this work more than a regular weekly commitment and it fitted in better with my golf and family life.

After a few months the existing chair decided to stand down and I was invited to take over, which I was more than happy to do. Most of the time I do a few hours per week to fit in with my other activities although, sometimes, it can get very busy. When we were buying our building last year there were a lot of negotiations and paperwork to approve.

I thoroughly enjoy my involvement with Wyre Forest CAB and I hope that the trustees continue to provide assistance and advice to help the Bureau to become even more successful in the future.
