Treatedly Differently by Employer/Shop?

Thursday, April 7, 2016

Wyre Forest’s current April campaign is to increase awareness of Discrimination. Many may not pick up on the fact they are being made redundant, dismissed, refused a service, over-charged or anything else, due to a characteristic. The protected characteristics according to the Equality Act 2010 are:

  • Pregnancy and maternity

  • Sexual orientation

  • Gender reassignment

  • Marriage and civil partnership

  • Religion and belief

  • Sex

  • Race

  • Disability

  • Age

If you were, for example, dismissed shortly after announcing you were pregnant at your workplace, chances are it could be discrimination. If you were refused a service on no reasonable grounds, it could be discrimination.

We want people to be aware that if they are being treated differently because of the way they are, they may be able to do something about it.

A client we had recently informed us that she was being refused taxi service on account of her being disabled in a wheelchair. The matter has now been escalated to an Ombudsman.
